Madras Institute of Technology (MIT) is an engineering institute based in Chrompet, Chennai (Madras), India. It is one of the four constituent autonomous colleges (university departments) of Anna University. It was established by Chinnaswamy Rajam in 1949 as the first self-funded engineering institute in the country, and then merged with Anna University.
The institute gave India new areas of expertise such as aeronautical engineering, automotive engineering, electronic engineering, and instrumentation techniques. MIT was the first open self-financing institution in India.MIT is also the first institute in India to offer graduate courses in avionics and mechatronics.
